Boyko Ranguelov is a full professor at University of Mining and Geology (MGU), (since 2010), Sofia, Bulgaria. Now works in the Space Research and Technology Institute – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Received the B.Sc., M.Sc. at the MGU in Geophysics, second M.Sc. in Appl. Math., at Technical Univ., Sofia. Got the Ph.D in Seismology (Physics) from Geophysical Institute – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1986. Head of the Department of Seismology and Deputy Director of the Institute (2002-2005). Academician in Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2013. Director of Natural Sciences Branch. Spent two years (2003-2004) in the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra (Italy) as visiting scientist. Visiting Professor at the University of Bologna, Italy – 2007-2008.
Published 20 books [Key books - “Fractal Universe: A case study of Solar System”, “Natural hazards – nonlinearities and assessment”, “Multihazards early warnings. Research, models and Bulgarian expertise”, “The Genesis of the Maldives: A New Hypotheses”] and more than 500 research papers and reports in various academic journals in English and in Bulgarian on the topics of the primary research interests: Astrophysics; Geophysics; Natural Hazards: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanoes, Floods, Forest fires; Nonlinearities: Fractals, Turbulences, Risk, damages assessment and mapping; Applied Geophysics: Oil and gas prospecting, Signal processing and data analysis, Antarctic research; Space Research: Remote sensing, Vulnerability assessment; Ecological Catastrophes: People safety, Risk management and mitigation, Early Warning Systems, Land-use planning.
Teaches courses in Geophysics, Seismology, Natural hazards, Applied Mathematics and Data analysis and processing. Member of the Editorial Boards of the Journals “Aerospace Research in Bulgaria”, “Research in Geophysics” and “Earth sciences”.
